Prospective Students

Considering coming to Virginia Tech and doing a Masters or Doctorate in Computer Science? I bet you are wondering what makes Virginia Tech a great choice. One, the campus and town are beautiful and filled with many unique restaurants and historic buildings. Two, the school campus is vast with most buildings covered in what has been dubbed as "Hokie Stone" - a local limestone. Third, the computer science department and the engineering school are highly competitive with many opportunities for you to find your home.

The building shown, McBryde Hall, is where you will have most of your classes. (It overlooks the drill field.) Here you can take classes in subjects like Human-Computer Interaction, Computational Biology & Bioinformatics, High Performance Computing & Computational Science, and Software Engineering. There is a lab on the top floor filled with computers for you to use at any time of the day. Next door to the lab is your mailbox and a small social area. The top floor is also the location of the administration building. (That is where you can find the head of the department -like Dennis Kafura.)

There are also many clubs and student groups that you can get involved with. More information about them can be found on the Computer Science Web Page. One of the main clubs you can participate in is the Computer Science Graduate Council. There is actually a specific spot available each semester for new graduate students to speak on opinions of how to make the school a better place. This is a great way to start getting involved and make friends.

One of the best things about a school like Virginia Tech is just how large it is. By being a large school you are able to take advantage of things like the Salsa Club, and the Cave Club. Through these clubs you are able to make friends and branch out to explore other facets of college life apart from an advance degree. Also, there are many expeditions out to the New River for tubing and rafting that are arranged and super fun.

If you would like, go to the graduate school on-line admission and apply now! We would love to see you next spring or fall semester.
